Louise G. Collier B.A, B.Ed. - Artist and Educator
After teaching art for many years and raising a family, I now have more time to concentrate on my own artwork. My work is in private collections nationally and internationally, as well as in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's art collection. I am a member of the Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.nlartassociation.ca) and VANL (www.vanl-carfac.com)
Scratchboard was first introduced to me many years ago, when I was in high school. It has not always been easy to find the necessary boards and tools, but online stores are making it much easier. Scratchboard is the medium that I am currently focusing on. In fact, the International Society of Scratchboard Artists was formed last year and I am an Active member. Our first show will be in California this summer and four of my scratchboards will be included. You can can visit the website to learn more about this exciting medium www.scratchboardsociety.com.
Unlike scratchboard, I have only recently been introduced to encaustic painting. Encaustic paint involves the manipulation of heated wax. Given the nature of the melted wax and mix of colour create unique pieces with exceptional texture and depth. It is very easy to create mixed media pieces as well. There are also some acrylic paintings on this page.
The white line woodcut prints are done with watercolour paint. The wood is cut with a line around all of the areas that will be printed. The paper is attached on one side of image. Each area is painted with watercolour paint then the paper is placed over it and burnished with a spoon. Each area may have this done a number of times, until the desired colour is achieved.
The reproductions you see on my site provide insight about life in rural Newfoundland, past and present.
I invite you to view my artwork in all of these mediums. Feel free to leave a comment or inquire. Thank you for your interest.
